US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth says Iran’s military capabilities have been significantly degraded after Israeli and US forces carried out more than 15,000 strikes across the country, claiming Tehran’s missile launch volume has fallen 90 percent and the use of one-way attack drones has dropped 95 percent since hostilities began.
Speaking at a press briefing, Hegseth said Iran no longer has the ability to build additional weapons and dismissed a public statement by Iran’s new supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei as weak, suggesting he was wounded and ‘likely disfigured’.
Khamenei took power after his father was killed on the opening day of what Tehran described as an unprovoked US-Israeli attack. Hegseth also said Washington was still weighing options over whether the US Navy would escort oil tankers through Strait of Hormuz, describing the waterway as tactically complex, as global concern over oil supply disruption intensified.
At the same time, the US Treasury temporarily eased sanctions on Russian oil shipments loaded before March 12, covering about 100 million barrels, while Brent crude remained volatile above US$100 a barrel. The latest developments come as Donald Trump said tankers should be prepared to cross the Strait of Hormuz and as US and Israeli airstrikes reportedly hit Tehran during a government-organised Quds Day march.
Assessing the full extent of damage in Tel Aviv and other parts of Israel remains difficult, as strict military censorship rules prohibit the public dissemination of footage or detailed reporting that could reveal the impact and location of strikes.
