Under fire New York Attorney General Letitia James was hit with a wave of criticism on social media after being indicted for alleged mortgage fraud, with users resurfacing her past posts declaring that “no one is above the law.”
The indictment, issued by a federal grand jury in Virginia, accuses James of bank fraud and making false statements to a financial institution, crimes that carry potential sentences of up to 30 years in prison per count and fines of up to $1 million each. U.S. Attorney Lindsey Halligan said the case represents “tremendous breaches of the public’s trust,” pledging that justice will be pursued.
Conservative commentators and politicians flooded X with James’s old posts, including a 2024 Valentine’s Day message mocking Donald Trump just before his civil fraud ruling in New York.
Popular U.S. conservative figures such as Elise Stefanik, Benny Johnson, and Clay Travis accused James of hypocrisy and politicising the justice system. Trump allies, including Rep. Mike Lawler, noted that her alleged misrepresentation of a property’s purpose would, by her own words, constitute a prosecutable offense. In response, James claimed the charges were “politically motivated retaliation” from Trump and his allies.
