Almost half of the more than 10,000 special votes cast in Auckland’s local elections were ruled invalid due to missing or incorrect declarations or outdated enrolments, delaying final results by a day.
Auckland Council confirmed to state-funded media that 4,162 special votes were discarded, leaving a total of 350,677 valid votes cast — a turnout of just 29.3 percent, down from 35.5 percent in 2022.
Mayor Wayne Brown was re-elected by a wide margin, while five new councillors joined the 20-member governing body, including Victoria Short, Matt Winiata, John Gillion, Bo Burns, and Labour’s Sarah Paterson-Hamlin.
