Opposition blocks Seymour’s motion for Charlie Kirk tribute in Parliament

Acting Prime Minister David Seymour says Labour and the Greens blocked his attempt to move a motion in Parliament paying respects to US conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated earlier today.

Seymour described the killing as a “bitter and tragic irony” against someone who championed free speech, adding that it resonated strongly with New Zealanders.

He argued Parliament should have acknowledged both the loss and the importance of freedom of expression, but Opposition parties rejected the move.

Labour deputy leader Carmel Sepuloni and the Greens said there was no precedent for formally noting the death of overseas figures without a direct New Zealand connection, despite acknowledging the tragedy.

  1. Did Labour hold any regard for human life during covid with untested vaccines unleashed on the public labeled safe proven and effective?
    These people the whole rotten lot are hypocrites and liars
    Truth in plain sight

  2. The left are evil and nasty who can’t handle free speech because they know their narratives are lies, their lifestyle is hypocritical and their behaviour is a reflection of the Weimar Republic.

    Many of them are also stupid. Stupid cannot maintain a cordial debate and they certainly can’t handle facts or truth.

  3. This guy, RIP, was buddy buddy with Netanyahu and Israels actions of late and, apparently a free speech advocate. Yet, in the US your freedom of speech and expression does not include criticism or boycotts of Israel!

      • “Charlie Kirk was murdered for speaking truth and defending freedom,” Netanyahu said in a statement. “A lion-hearted friend of Israel, he fought the lies and stood tall for Judeo-Christian civilization.”

        “Aish, the Jewish people and the pro-Israel community deeply mourn the senseless assassination of Charlie Kirk,” said Rabbi Steven Burg, the chairman of the Orthodox Jewish outreach group. “He was a steadfast ally of Israel and a courageous advocate for our people.”

    • Apparently he was wearing a vest. Other footage shows the bullet hitting the vest and deflecting to neck. This raises its own set of questions?

  4. From the Jerusalem Post;

    Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu revealed that he had spoken to Kirk two weeks ago and invited him to Israel, describing him as a “lion-hearted friend” of the Jewish state. “Sadly, that visit will not take place,” he said.

    “Kirk was murdered for speaking truth and defending freedom,” he added in a post on X/Twitter. “He fought the lies and stood tall for Judeo-Christian civilization. We lost an incredible human being. His boundless pride in America and his valiant belief in free speech will leave a lasting impact. Rest in peace.”

    Lying hypocrite. Criticism of Israel is curtailed on US university grounds by threats to their funding.

  5. Never vote the leftist looneys Labour, maori, greens in ever. They are communist and will destroy NZ, and finally sell our women and daughters to Islam (in time).
