Police are investigating a technical fault in their Incident Management Tool that may have exposed sensitive information intended to be redacted from disclosure documents since 4 December.
Lawyers representing defendants were alerted to the issue and advised to retrieve or delete affected disclosure packages and comply with legal obligations preventing further disclosure.
Police paused the disclosure function on 15 December while a fix was developed and tested, with functionality now restored.
The Police Minister and Office of the Privacy Commissioner have been notified, and an assessment is under way to determine the scope and impact of the potential privacy breach. Victims’ advocates have sought assurances around protections for affected victims and witnesses as investigations continue.
