Police will be out in force on the country’s roads over the summer holiday period as the Government urges motorists to make safe choices and reduce preventable deaths.
Transport Minister Chris Bishop said increased police visibility will focus on deterring dangerous behaviour such as speeding, drink and drug driving, and failure to wear seatbelts.
He said alcohol and drug impairment remains one of the leading causes of fatal crashes, with around 30 percent of road deaths involving an impairing substance. Bishop said new roadside drug testing is beginning to roll out nationwide and is expected ‘to improve’ road safety.
Drivers are being encouraged to check weather conditions, plan rest breaks and avoid getting behind the wheel if unfit to drive.
The Government is also highlighting progress on major transport projects, including Ōtaki to North of Levin, Takitimu North Link Stage 1, SH29 Tauriko West and the Hawke’s Bay Expressway, which are expected to ease congestion during peak holiday travel.
The official Christmas–New Year holiday period runs from 4pm on December 24 to 6am on January 5.

one of them are and always will be..
Reefer madness
Time to collect some more revenue from the sheeple……
Let’s see how many speed cameras are set up in accident hotspots, as opposed to locations which have no record of danger but provide them with the most revenue.
Convenient as there will never be a zero rate.
State terrorism disguised as “Health & Safety”.
