Scandals contributed to Labour’s 2023 election defeat – Hipkins

Labour 2023 scandals news

‘Integrity issues’ labelled as key factor in Labour’s 2023 downfall, according to new book.

Former Prime Minister Chris Hipkins has acknowledged that a series of ministerial scandals significantly contributed to Labour’s heavy defeat in the 2023 general election.

In the newly released book Back on Track, Hipkins reflects on how issues surrounding ministerial integrity, including resignations and public controversies, weakened the public’s confidence in his government.

He cited the scandals involving high-profile ministers such as Kiri Allan, Stuart Nash, and Michael Wood, whose actions, coupled with other party controversies, painted a picture of a government in disarray.

The book also highlights wider integrity issues that played a role in the election, including investigations into lobbying, party funding scandals, and poor behaviour by political candidates.

In her chapter on “political integrity”, former journalist Jacqui Van Der Kaay describes how these issues erode public trust and engagement in politics, ultimately contributing to Labour’s electoral loss.

Van Der Kaay warns that similar integrity challenges are emerging in the current government, noting that these ongoing scandals could have a lasting impact on public confidence in the political system.

Back on Track, edited by Stephen Levine, explores the various factors that shaped the 2023 election and is being launched today.

    • Hipkins is lower than a vipers belly in a wheel rut
A pasty faced freak who lied through his fangs then denied ever having done so

Well the reality check is this motley crew of proselyte deceivers and misfits has not gone off the radar

  1. Of course nothing to do with mandates, compulsory vaccination, the reckless disregard for the country’s finances…….in house scandal was at the bottom of the list.
What counted most was ability to effectively plan, execute and monitor but Labour simply couldn’t get past first base!
A return of Labour in 2026 will see a mass exodus at a scale never seen before!

  2. Vote for whoever. Fact is the general public will go along or not. When it gets to the point of total non-compliance there’s not much a government can do about it. There’s millions of people, and a handful of them.
Laws are just words on paper, the people are always in charge.

  3. Don’t give all the credit to other members of the party Hipkins. Compared to your actions during your brief period of power they were minor players.
Write as many books as you wish, you will never change the reality of what happened and the part you played in it as Covid-19 Response Minister – with Chris Bishop as your little echo chamber from National cheering you on!
Don’t you know yet how utterly hated you are in this country you little Trotskyite wannabe?

  4. Forever remembered and ridiculed when asked what is a woman?

“Um… to be honest that question has come slightly out of left field for me,”
    “Well biology, sex, gender. Um.”
“People define themselves, people define their own genders.”
“I wasn’t expecting that question, so it wasn’t something I pre-formulated an answer on. But in terms of gender identity, people identify for themselves.”

  5. Oh, is that what you think? Nothing to do with medical authoritarianism under COVID? Coerced jabs, demonising those who did not want the jab because they, not unreasonably, thought it was rushed, whilst established safe and truly effective alternatives, like Ivermectin which most people, I’d say, would happily take, wasn’t made available (oh but its horse medicine! Tell that to India!). Then we have the sickening abuse of peaceful protesters by the so called NZ police at the governments behest. Plus demands people wear useless masks, endure harsh lock downs and more besides.

I’d reasonably guess Labour is widely hated. I know I’d vote for Satan, if he stood for office, rather than NZ Labour.

  6. Well little Chris Hipkins if that’s what you think then you stick to that but seriously no one really believes in your fairy tale.
Right from the start Labour lacked any ability to deliver on any of their objectives and became patently obvious. The biggest problem was numero uno Jacinda Ardern the biggest flake of them all but there were also so many others, how could it ever be sustained? Like a dead duck or a rotten corpse.

Soon to he seen as n the bargain bins.

    • She had check-out experience though
Came in handy when she did a runner
      Run out of gas?
Where did ‘she’ get that from?
      Why did Key flee?
Because he had no appetite for what was coming up in Christchurch
