
Sir Michael Hill, the founder of the renowned jewellery chain bearing his name, has died at age 86.
Born in Whangārei, Hill began in the family jewellery business before launching his own store in 1979, which grew into a 300-store empire across New Zealand, Australia, and Canada.
Knighted in 2011, he was also a passionate patron of the arts, founding the Michael Hill International Violin Competition in 2001.
A private memorial will be held in Arrowtown.
