A survey of New Zealand teens found that 66% of respondents opposed the proposed social media ban for under-16s.
Conducted by Otumoetai College student Liam Howard via school networks, the survey reached 596 students, with answers submitted anonymously to prevent multiple entries.
Howard said he conducted the survey because he “didn’t see anybody talking about what youth were thinking on the subject” and “felt odd they were leaving out information on the people the ban is literally about”.
The findings are broadly in line with similar surveys conducted in the UK, US, Europe and Australia, which also showed a majority of teens opposed blanket bans on social media.

No one likes being censored kids we get that and well done Liam (although this is really about proxy Digital ID’s for everyone). So next election if you are old enough to vote, how about giving National and Labour, a hard pass? If their support shrinks, so does their impact on politics in NZ.

It’s really insulting to think that our digitally literate youth need curtailing when the ‘adults’ in the room insist on using terminology referring to baby goats. A quick scan on Google shows only Collins Dictionary has it the right way around. How is artificially generated intelligence supposed to differentiate between baby goats and young people when it’s obvious most adults can’t be bothered??
