U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that Washington may pursue the “hard way” to secure control over Greenland, insisting the United States will act “whether they like it or not” to prevent the strategic Arctic island from ‘falling under Russian or Chinese influence’.
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said he preferred a negotiated outcome but made clear that alternatives remained on the table. “I would like to make a deal, you know, the easy way,” he said. “But if we don’t do it the easy way, we’re going to do it the hard way.” He added that the US could not allow rivals to gain a foothold in Greenland, arguing that without American action, “Russia or China will take over Greenland.”
Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory with a population of fewer than 57,000, is already home to a US military presence, but Trump has repeatedly argued that full US control is essential for Arctic security. While Denmark has firmly rejected the idea, Trump did not rule out compensating Greenlanders, saying payments could be considered as part of a potential deal. His comments have reignited tensions with European allies, with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warning that any US military action against a NATO member would mean “everything stops,” and European leaders stressing that Greenland “belongs to its people.”
Reports have suggested the Trump administration would prefer to buy Greenland rather than use coercion, with discussions allegedly including payments of between $10,000 and $100,000 per resident, a total that would amount to under $6 billion even at the highest level. Denmark already provides Greenland with substantial annual funding through a block grant and has recently expanded its financial commitments, including covering the cost of specialised medical treatment in Danish hospitals. Despite renewed US pressure, opinion polling in Greenland indicates strong opposition to joining the United States, with around 85% of residents rejecting the idea and only a small minority expressing support.

NATO means North Atlantic Territory organisation. France withdrew from the military side of it around 1969. New Zealand has some sort of association with NATO. Unsure what that might limit us to.
