Senior officials from the United States and Iran are expected to pursue further diplomatic engagement after initial talks in Oman, with Iran’s foreign minister describing the meeting as a constructive first step despite deep divisions.

Abbas Araghchi called the discussions a “good beginning” that focused “exclusively” on nuclear matters, adding that both sides would now return home to consult before deciding the next stage.

Before the meeting, Washington signalled it wanted broader negotiations covering Iran’s missile programme and regional armed networks, highlighting significant gaps in priorities. The talks unfolded as US forces increased their presence across the Middle East following Iran’s crackdown on nationwide riots, which Iran says were fuelled by US and Israeli operatives.

The diplomatic push comes alongside escalating rhetoric and military positioning. President Donald Trump has warned Iran could face bombing if no agreement is reached, while Iran has threatened retaliation against US and Israeli targets if attacked.

Araghchi acknowledged an “atmosphere of mistrust” that would need to be resolved before progress could be made, while Oman’s foreign minister said the talks helped clarify positions and identify potential areas for movement.

US officials are yet to comment on the talks.

The discussions marked the first direct engagement between US and Iranian officials since last year’s 12-day war involving Israel and Iran and subsequent US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. While both sides have hinted at possible compromises, including nuclear concessions in exchange for sanctions relief, major disagreements remain over missiles, regional alliances, and the future structure of any deal.

  1. Probably end up giving them a Uranium isotope in a paper bag…..then Stumps administration can declare war on the sea perhaps? After all, it lets the fishermen, oops I mean drug traffickers carry their illicit fish, I mean drugs to the USA…..

  2. It’s insane to ‘talk’ to a fanatical religious regime which is has vowed to destroy the West, sponsors terrorism on a massive scale and is trying to build nuclear weapons.

Oh yes. Let’s talk to them. Their religion says that lying to and deceiving unbelievers is a valid weapon approved by their God. But hey, talking is good, right?

  3. Don’t bother Iran. They want you to give up your defence capabilities – your missiles and drones. And when they don’t get an agreement, they can then say they tried but you refused, so now we gotta attack anyways.

They are snakes. Feed them false narratives if you give them anything

  4. If the USA was genuinely interested in diplomacy then why did they slap further sanctions on Iran yesterday? For any talks to be meaningful, trust needs to exist. The USA and Israel have proven nobody can trust them when they attacked Iran last year in the middle of talks between USA and Iran. The USA have therefore proven they cannot be trusted – so any talks are a sham to provide everyone the illusion of diplomacy. It’s talking just for the sake of talking without achieving anything substantial. Both the USA and Iran are simply buying time to further strengthen and improve their militaries.

  5. Trump ripped up the Iran nuclear treaty in his first term then told everyone last year Iran’s nuclear programme had been obliterated. Now he is wanting to negotiate a nuclear deal? Muppet.

  6. One ray of sunshine is that if the Strait of Hormuz is in fact blocked
NZ will have inbuilt fuel security in the interim through having the Marsden Oil Refinery
And people are ready to vote for these clowns again
