Wealthy foreign investors can buy or build $5m luxury homes

Foreign investment news

The coalition government has confirmed a new exemption to New Zealand’s foreign buyers ban, allowing wealthy “golden visa” investors to purchase or build a single luxury home worth at least $5 million.

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon said the change strikes a balance between protecting the housing market and attracting high-net-worth individuals to invest in the economy, while Winston Peters emphasised strict limits excluding farm and sensitive land.

Foreign buyers have largely been barred from the housing market since 2018, but the exemption links to the Active Investor Plus programme, which already requires multi-million-dollar investments for residency.

Immigration NZ data shows more than 300 applications so far, representing up to $1.8 billion in potential investment, with around 40 percent from the US.

  1. And that folk’s, is how they will keep propping up the real estate market, and now they need over sea’s capital to do so, which will keep it going for a while longer.

  2. “While Winston Peters emphasised strict limits excluding farm and sensitive land”.
Right, just like they (government crime syndicate) are protecting our food producing/productive farmland from foreign owned corporations and oligarchs buying up 1000’s of hectares at a time and planting ‘noxious weeds’ called pine trees, eh Winston.

  3. Yep we are a playground for rich people, while the average Kiwi struggles and many feel the need to leave. Another slap in the face for locals, from this pathetic coalition government.
