White House Correspondents’ dinner suspect identified

Authorities in the United States have detained the man accused of launching an armed attack outside the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner in Washington, DC, triggering a major security response and the evacuation of Donald Trump and senior officials.

The incident unfolded at the Washington Hilton on Saturday evening, where the high-profile event was underway.

Gunfire erupted after the suspect allegedly forced his way through a security checkpoint near the ballroom, prompting intervention from the United States Secret Service. Officers fired at the man before taking him into custody at the scene. Trump later described the episode as a “would-be assassination” attempt and said authorities believed the attacker was acting alone. Guests inside the venue scrambled for cover as security teams moved swiftly to secure the area.

US media reports have identified the suspect as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen, though officials have not formally confirmed his identity. Investigators say he is believed to be from Torrance, California, and may have been staying at the hotel at the time, but a clear motive has yet to be established.

In the hours following the incident, attention shifted online after users highlighted an obscure account on X that appeared to reference the suspect’s name more than two years earlier. The account, which had only a single post dated December 2023, contained the words “Cole Allen” and little else, with no clear context, biography, or location attached.

The discovery has fuelled widespread speculation across social media, with some users questioning whether the post was coincidental, predictive, or linked in some way to the suspect. Others have suggested it could simply reflect a common name or be unrelated entirely.

Officials have not commented on the circulating claims, and no credible information has emerged to substantiate the theories. Investigators remain focused on establishing the suspect’s motive and movements, while authorities have urged the public to treat unverified online material with caution as the inquiry continues.
