A former Shortland Street actor has been sentenced to seven months’ home detention after a violent road rage assault that left his victim with lasting injuries.
Brooklyn Nathan, 20, admitted repeatedly punching a man during a roadside confrontation following a crash caused by his mother in Auckland’s Goodwood Heights.
The victim suffered a fractured eye socket, severe facial injuries and ongoing double vision requiring surgery and continued medical treatment.
The court heard Nathan became aggressive while his mother discussed the crash, struck the man as he tried to call police, and continued the assault even after he fell to the ground, before fleeing the scene.
Nathan later claimed self-defence, a claim rejected by the court. Judge David McNaughton said the attack was serious but granted home detention after applying discounts for Nathan’s guilty plea, youth and rehabilitation efforts, reducing a starting sentence of imprisonment to seven months’ home detention.
