The American Samoa Government has hosted its annual TAOA Christmas Celebration, bringing together senior citizens, government leaders and community members to honour the wisdom, service and spiritual leadership of the territory’s elders.
The event was led by Governor Pulaali’i and Lieutenant Governor Pulumataala and marked the first time the celebration has been held under their administration. Among the distinguished guests were Senate President Tuaolo Fruean and Speaker of the House Savali Talavou Ale, who attended with their spouses.
Proceedings opened with an invocation delivered by Penaia Faali’i, who emphasised the central role elders play as custodians of faith, prayer and cultural strength within the community.
In his address, Governor Pulaali’i paid tribute to senior citizens, describing them as the foundation of American Samoa. He acknowledged their guidance and prayers as essential to the wellbeing of families, villages and future generations.
The programme included hymns performed by the Department of Human and Social Services, while cabinet members joined the Governor and Lieutenant Governor in serving Christmas meals and distributing gifts to attendees.
Lieutenant Governor Pulumataala delivered the closing remarks, thanking elders for their lifelong devotion to their communities and recognising their continued influence and presence as a source of inspiration.
Special recognition was given to elders aged between 90 and 101, including Pouiva Tauoa Reid, aged 101, the oldest senior citizen honoured at the event.
The celebration concluded with the presentation of gifts to all elders in attendance, reinforcing the government’s commitment to recognising and uplifting senior citizens across the territory.
