The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has announced changes to the Laws of Cricket, effective 1 October 2026, allowing laminated “Type D” bats made from up to three pieces of wood to be used in open age recreational cricket.
Previously restricted to junior levels, the change aims to make the sport more affordable as the cost of English willow has surged due to global demand and limited supply.
While professional players are expected to continue using traditional single-piece willow bats, manufacturers will now also be allowed to use alternative woods behind the bat face.
The MCC says testing shows any performance advantage from laminated bats is minimal and the move is designed to improve affordability and sustainability without altering the nature of the game.
