AC Milan and Inter Milan have welcomed the city council’s approval to sell the San Siro, in a move that could see the 99-year-old stadium demolished and replaced with a new 71,500-capacity venue.
After a 12-hour debate, the sale was backed for €197m (£172m), though it still requires final confirmation from the city government.
Both clubs hailed the decision as “historic and decisive,” saying the new ground, planned as part of a wider urban regeneration project, would be a world-class facility and architectural icon, with hopes of completion before Euro 2032, which Italy is co-hosting with Turkey.
