Kenya’s Sabastian Sawe made history at the London Marathon by becoming the first athlete to run an official sub-two-hour marathon, finishing in 1:59:30 and eclipsing the previous world record set by the late Kelvin Kiptum.
Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha also dipped under two hours in second place, while Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo completed a remarkable podium, making it one of the greatest marathon finishes ever.
In the women’s race, Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa defended her title and broke her own women’s-only world record, highlighting a day of exceptional performances in near-ideal conditions.
Sawe’s achievement, accomplished in open competition rather than controlled conditions, marks a historic breakthrough in distance running after years of failed attempts to officially crack the two-hour barrier.
