The long-standing stance on All Blacks international player eligibility is increasingly under scrutiny, with growing calls to rethink the rule as the game evolves and New Zealand risks falling behind.
New coach Dave Rennie has pushed for a reassessment, and incoming defence coach Tana Umaga has echoed that view, acknowledging that early player departures overseas are limiting experience at test level.
While still valuing the traditional requirement to be based in New Zealand, Umaga admitted the conversation must happen, pointing to the success of the Springboks. He stressed any return of overseas-based players would still require them to prove themselves in the physical demands of Super Rugby, with selection based on who best fits the team, as the All Blacks also explore greater versatility and ‘hybrid roles’ within the squad.
“There’s still the status quo in me, but then I see where South Africa are. Everyone’s talking about it. I suppose I’m not as hard as I was before. You just think of what’s best,” said Umaga.
