Australian government blocks AI copyright loophole

The Albanese government has rejected calls for a text and data mining exception in copyright law, signalling a tougher stance against tech giants profiting from Australian creative works to train artificial intelligence models.

Attorney-General Michelle Rowland said the Copyright and AI Reference Group will explore ways to compel AI developers to compensate artists, writers, and journalists whose content fuels data-hungry systems like ChatGPT and Gemini. She stressed that while AI offers major economic opportunities, creators must also benefit, adding that the government “will not weaken copyright protections when it comes to AI.”

Industry leaders including News Corp’s Michael Miller and ARIA chief Annabelle Herd welcomed the decision as a victory for Australian creatives and cultural integrity. Both praised the government for rejecting the Productivity Commission’s recommendation for a data mining exception, which they argued would have unfairly advantaged Silicon Valley firms. The move reinforces creators’ rights to control and monetise their work, as the government works toward new frameworks to ensure innovation and compensation coexist in the evolving AI landscape.

  1. How on Earth have we been so blind? first to let Google to scan every book, then photograph every street and make mega bucks off us?
A.I. will just suck up all human endeavour, and then charge us back for using it later.
BOYCOTT all American Services – they are only out to Bankrupt us before they fall off the cliff.

    • A few years back I made a decision to rid myself of all things Google. There are alternatives.

I do not claim this will stop google. They are entrenched into every part of the internet.

Sitting quietly in a chair, alone from family and friends clicking on whatever you feel like. Burning hours of your time. Those hours soon turn into years. You are driven to seek knowledge but its time to set limitations online.

Get out and about. Spend time with friends and family. Dont make the same mistakes i did by locking myself away. You will regret it.
