Australian police say the two men accused of carrying out the deadly shooting at a Jewish Hanukkah event on Bondi Beach were not part of a wider terror network and appear to have acted independently.
Investigators say Sajid Akram, 50, and his son Naveed Akram, 24, travelled to the Philippines in November but did not receive training or logistical support there, with CCTV footage showing they rarely left their hotel before returning to Sydney weeks later.
The attack, which killed 15 people and has been declared Australia’s worst mass shooting since 1996, is being treated as a terrorist incident, with authorities saying the pair were likely motivated by ‘Islamic State ideology’.
Sajid Akram was shot dead by police during the attack, while Naveed Akram survived and now faces 59 charges, including 15 counts of murder and committing a terrorist act.
Australian Federal Police Commissioner Krissy Barrett said the investigation remains ongoing and warned further evidence could still emerge.
