Critics warn EU “Media Freedom Act” will see journalists arrested in the “public interest”

EU Media Freedom Act news

The European Media Freedom Act has officially taken effect across all EU member states, aiming to “safeguard press freedom” and the confidentiality of sources.

However, critics are raising concerns over clauses that allow authorities to detain journalists if deemed necessary in the “public interest.”

Under Articles 3(b) and 4(c), member states are prohibited from detaining, sanctioning, intercepting, or inspecting media service providers—unless justified “on a case-by-case basis by an overriding reason of public interest.” The law also contains provisions to combat “disinformation,” which some fear could be used to suppress dissenting voices.

Unelected EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen described the legislation as “reinforcing democracy”, calling “a free and independent press an essential pillar” of the bloc. The act permits surveillance for serious crimes, including terrorism and racism, and requires national regulatory bodies to cooperate in “addressing misinformation”.

Other measures include the creation of national lists detailing the owners and addresses of media outlets, as outlined in Article 6.

While the law’s stated purpose is to strengthen media freedom, opponents warn its broad powers could be misused to restrict journalism under the guise of “protection”.

    • They know it well.

Their media puppets and vapid celebrities are a laughing stock, they’re losing elections all over the place, no one is falling for the same old BS anymore.

All of these new internet/censorship laws and globalist collaboration “compacts” they’re pushing out are just about clamping down on the free flow of information and snuffing out citizen journalists. Everyone knows it. Even if they want to call it the “cuddly kitten” Act, it’s REAL intent is obvious to everyone on BOTH sides.

They’re evil (and stupid) enough to think if they can just cancel X and YouTube and threaten us all with prison, we’ll magically all go back to being afraid of pandemics and trusting CNN and not noticing the demographic replacements being imported in and turning our countries into lawless, murderous, rapey hell holes.

      That’s a bold strategy, Cotton…
