Imran Khan and wife handed new jail terms over state gifts jewellery case

Former Pakistani prime minister and cricket icon Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi have received additional prison sentences after being convicted in a fraud case involving state gifts, deepening the legal troubles facing the jailed opposition figure.

The court found the couple breached Pakistan’s rules governing official gifts after a luxury Bulgari jewellery set, presented to Bibi during a 2021 state visit by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, was improperly handled.

Under the ruling, Khan was sentenced to 10 years for criminal breach of trust and seven years for criminal misconduct, with the terms set to run concurrently alongside sentences he is already serving, while the couple were also fined more than 16 million Pakistani rupees.

Prosecutors alleged the jewellery should have been deposited with the state treasury but was instead undervalued by a private firm and bought back at a reduced price.

Khan has rejected the charges as politically motivated, and his lawyer confirmed plans to challenge the verdict in the high court, saying the defence was only notified of the sentencing after hours. The case is one of many facing Khan since his arrest in August 2023, including earlier corruption convictions and other pending charges, as the former leader continues to criticise Pakistan’s current leadership from prison via statements posted on his social media accounts.

  1. Any justice system that panders to the ruling elite, regardless of where such corrupt rulings may occur, will be overturned in the end.
The final ruling will always be delivered by the Peoples’ final court: Revolution.
