Protesters and government supporters clash in Belgrade (Video)

Violence broke out in Belgrade on Sunday as supporters and opponents of Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic clashed during rival demonstrations marking the anniversary of last year’s deadly Novi Sad train station canopy collapse.

The disaster, which killed 16 people, has become a flashpoint for anti-government protests accusing the ruling SNS party of corruption and negligence.

Thousands of demonstrators, including university students and victims’ families, rallied outside the Serbian parliament demanding accountability, while pro-government groups gathered nearby in Pionirski Park to counter what they called disruptive tactics by student protesters.

Police reported bottles and firecrackers being thrown between the groups, with one arrest made. Serbia’s Interior Ministry blamed an “organized group” of anti-government demonstrators for the unrest, while opposition activists accused Vucic’s supporters of instigating the violence. The president dismissed allegations against his party, claiming foreign influence was fueling the protests.
