Spain faces deadliest flooding in decades

Eastern Spain is grappling with its worst flooding in over 30 years, following torrential rains that inundated the region from Malaga to Valencia.

In just eight hours, parts of the Valencian Community received a year’s worth of rainfall, causing widespread devastation.

At least 70 people have died, with others still missing, as search and recovery operations involving the Spanish military, aircraft, and specialised search dogs are underway.

The disaster marks Spain’s deadliest flood since 1996 and the worst in Europe since the 2021 floods in Germany. Thousands remain impacted by blackouts, and infrastructure damage has suspended high-speed train services between Madrid, Valencia, and along the Mediterranean Corridor.

The storm left many stranded, with residents forced to seek refuge on rooftops and in vehicles to avoid rising waters.

Floodwaters have reached two metres deep in some locations, sweeping away vehicles and creating barricades of debris in city streets.

The storm continues to move north and south, threatening Catalonia, Aragon, and Andalusia, with the city of Cadiz under red alert for additional flooding risks.

Social media footage reveals the destruction, capturing torrents of water, mudslides, and towns submerged, underscoring the severe impact of the storm on affected communities.
