A bipartisan group of U.S. lawmakers has introduced legislation aimed at preventing President Donald Trump from using military force against Greenland.
Measures introduced in both the House and Senate would bar federal funds from being used to invade, occupy, annex, or conduct military operations against any NATO member, and would also prohibit US officials from taking steps to carry out such actions.
The bills reflect growing concern in Congress over Trump’s repeated statements that the United States will acquire Greenland “one way or another,” including reports that senior military leaders were asked to consider invasion plans.
While some Republicans have dismissed the idea as unrealistic and stressed there is no pending declaration of war, others have backed Trump’s ambitions, introducing separate legislation to fast-track Greenland’s annexation and statehood.
Denmark has firmly rejected Trump’s claims that US action is needed to counter Russia or China, arguments that have also been dismissed by officials in Beijing and Moscow, both of whom have criticised any move to militarise the Arctic.
