Ukraine has sentenced an Orthodox priest to five years in prison as part of its escalating campaign against the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC), which officials accuse of maintaining pro-Russian sympathies.
Archpriest Ivan Pavlichenko of Odessa’s Church of St. Mary Magdalene received the harsher sentence after an appeals court overturned his earlier suspended term, ruling that he had “justified Russia’s armed aggression” and stoked religious and national division.
The case relied heavily on recordings of his private phone conversations, in which he allegedly criticised Ukraine’s leadership, questioned Kiev’s stance on the conflict, discussed Russian political views, and suggested Russian strikes targeted military sites concealed in residential areas.
Alongside the prison term, the court ordered the confiscation of his property and barred him from public-sector roles for three years.
Supporters claim the prosecution is politically driven, pointing to his past civic activity and alleged attendance at pro-Russian events.
The ruling comes as Kiev tightens pressure on the UOC, conducting raids, detaining clergy, and advancing legislation against religious organisations linked to states deemed hostile.
Moscow has criticised Ukraine’s actions, promising to defend the rights of Orthodox believers caught in the widening crackdown.
