The State Department has accused Gustavo Petro of “incendiary actions” at a New York City rally.
The United States will revoke the visa of Colombian President Gustavo Petro following what officials described as “reckless and incendiary actions” during a street protest in New York City, the State Department announced late Friday.
The Colombian leader was seen speaking through a megaphone and addressing a crowd of pro-Palestinian protesters earlier in the day. The incident occurred days after his fiery address at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, where he openly criticized US foreign policy and called for legal action against President Donald Trump.
“We will revoke Petro’s visa due to his reckless and incendiary actions,” the State Department posted Friday evening, adding that the Colombian president “stood on a NYC street and urged US soldiers to disobey orders and incite violence.”
Protests gripped New York during Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s appearance at the United Nations on Friday. Thousands of demonstrators marched through Midtown Manhattan, many of them calling for a ceasefire in Gaza and denouncing Netanyahu as a “war criminal.”

“Disobey Trump’s orders — obey humanity’s orders,” Petro told the crowd via a translator. “I knelt down as a Christian before the graves of thousands of American soldiers who died in the fields of Europe fighting against Hitler. The grandparents of today’s mariners and soldiers. The United States Army must set an example. They are in a great alliance with peoples from all over the world.”
During his UN address on Tuesday, President Petro issued a scathing critique of Western powers, accused the US of perpetuating global inequality, and described the war in Gaza as “genocide.”
“Trump… allows missiles to be launched against young children, women, and the elderly in Gaza, making himself complicit in genocide,” Petro said in his UN remarks.
The State Department has not clarified whether Petro will be expelled immediately or how the decision might affect future diplomatic engagements. The Colombian government has not yet issued an official response.

I reject the “poverty causes crime” excuse. And I will never budge on that. People know right from wrong, free will exists. Lots and lots of poor people on this earth go to bed starving every night without descending into lawlessness.
Columbia is a hell hole of drug cartels, fascist regimes, human trafficking and general moral decay. You can make the case that America corrupted them and exploited their country and its resources for decades (and you wouldn’t be wrong), but that still doesn’t absolve the Columbians of their own guilt in it. They were happy to take the money and look the other way for decades at the expense of their own countrymen.
Standing with a megaphone on a street corner now and projecting virtue against their enabler, just because it’s now run by a president who’s no longer sending tons of 💵 their way is extremely cringey and hypocrisy of the highest order.
