Xi Jinping has renewed Beijing’s vow to reunify with Taiwan, declaring the process “unstoppable” as China ramps up military pressure around the island.
In a New Year’s Eve address, Xi said people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait shared “a bond of blood and kinship,” adding that reunification with the mainland was “a trend of the times” that could not be halted.
Taiwan has been governed separately since 1949, but Beijing continues to regard it as part of China under the One China policy.
While insisting reunification should be peaceful, China has not ruled out force if what it calls “separatist forces” move toward independence.
This week, the People’s Liberation Army staged large-scale drills around Taiwan, shortly after the United States approved a record arms package for the island, further sharpening regional tensions.
