An investigation has revealed that Thomas Matthew Crooks, the alleged gunman who attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump, used encrypted messaging accounts on platforms based in New Zealand, Belgium, and Germany.
The revelation, disclosed by Republican Representative Michael Waltz, has raised suspicions, particularly given Crooks’ seemingly ordinary background as a 19-year-old health care aide.
Waltz questioned why someone like Crooks would need access to foreign-based encrypted platforms, suggesting potential links to terrorist organisations. Crooks fired multiple shots at Trump during a Pennsylvania rally on July 13, injuring the former president and killing a volunteer fire chief. Counter-snipers killed Crooks at the scene, and the incident has since sparked widespread controversy.
Independent researchers have proposed theories that Crooks may have been a ‘patsy,’ with some suggesting that the real assassin’s identity is being covered up.
These theories have gained traction following the resignation of former Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle, who took full responsibility for the security lapse.
Waltz has criticised the Secret Service and FBI for withholding the full findings of their investigation, further fueling speculation. The Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General is conducting its own inquiry into the incident, amid growing public demand for transparency.
