BBC defends Women’s Footballer of the Year winner amid gender regulation controversy

BBC news

Zambian footballer Barbra Banda, previously removed from the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) over gender eligibility concerns, has been named BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year.

Banda, who plays for Orlando Pride, received the most votes in a public poll despite controversy surrounding her high testosterone levels, which exceeded CAF’s limits.

Critics, including author JK Rowling and former female athletes, condemned the decision as a threat to the integrity of women’s sports, with calls for obligatory sex screening to prevent similar disputes in the future.

The UK state broadcaster clarified that its selection panel, comprising global football experts, excluded its personnel and that the winner was determined by public vote.

Banda, a former professional boxer, has found success in a football career, helping Orlando Pride secure their first NWSL title this year with 13 goals.

Banda’s supporters highlight the player’s exceptional talent, pointing to a record-breaking performance at the Tokyo Olympics.
