Switzerland’s football captain Granit Xhaka has admitted obtaining a fake Covid vaccination certificate in 2022 and has pulled out of the national team’s next four matches.
Xhaka said he had felt “a deep mistrust of the vaccine,” at a time when many countries required vaccination for work, travel and activities. Lucerne prosecutors were investigating Xhaka and the doctor suspected of issuing the certificate, who claimed she vaccinated him correctly.
Police raided her practice in 2023 and she now faces a possible ban from practising. Document forgery carries a fine or up to five years in prison in Switzerland.
