Crystal Mangum, who falsely accused three Duke University lacrosse players of raping her in 2006, has confessed to fabricating the story in an interview.
Mangum, now serving a prison sentence for murder, admitted she lied to “gain validation” and betrayed the trust of those who supported her.
Her false claims led to the arrest of David Evans, Collin Finnerty, and Reade Seligmann, sparking national outrage in the US and discussions on racism.
Although the players were found not guilty, Mangum was not prosecuted for perjury due to questions about her mental health and the expiration of the statute of limitations. The case also led to the disbarment of prosecutor Mike Nifong for withholding exculpatory evidence.
Mangum’s history includes claims of prior sexual assault, unresolved allegations, and a 2008 memoir in which she maintained “something” happened during the night of the party. Her tumultuous past and ongoing mental health struggles have been cited by supporters as factors in her actions.
This woman needs to go to prison for the same length of time her victims would have.
The victims should have all their legal fees paid for by the state, along with a lump sum to set them up for life.
Even then, that would not be enough.
