Kiwis and Kiwi Ferns stars are celebrating confirmation that both national sides will play a World Cup double-header at Christchurch’s brand-new indoor stadium next year, marking a landmark moment for rugby league in the city.
The 30,000-seat One New Zealand Stadium — set to open in April — will host Round 2 of the IRL Rugby League World Cup 2026, giving fans their first major international fixtures under a fully enclosed roof. The Kiwis will face the Cook Islands, while the Kiwi Ferns meet France on Sunday, October 25, following their opening matches in Australia.
Players told the warriors.kiwi website the opportunity to play a World Cup fixture in Christchurch is both rare and deeply meaningful.
Fullback Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad said the atmosphere would be “amazing,” with the region’s passionate league supporters sure to fill the stadium. Fellow Kiwis forward Isaiah Papali’i said he was eager to experience an indoor venue for the first time, calling the home-ground advantage a major lift for the squad.
The Kiwi Ferns also expressed excitement, with forwards Alexis Tauaneai and Angelina Teakaraanga-Katoa describing the tournament as a chance to showcase the growth and ambition of women’s rugby league.
Both New Zealand teams will also feature in a Round 3 double-header on the Gold Coast before heading into the knockout stages.
