US President Donald Trump will have his signature added to US paper currency from this summer, according to the Treasury Department, marking the first time a sitting president’s signature appears on legal tender.
The redesign is tied to America’s 250th anniversary and will replace the US treasurer’s signature while keeping that of Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, with $100 notes expected to be printed in June before other denominations follow.
Officials say the move recognises national milestones, but critics argue it politicises currency and blurs the line between national symbols and personal branding, with Democrats also raising concerns as proposals for Trump-themed coins and broader branding across federal programmes draw scrutiny.
