Seven people, including five children, have been discharged from hospital after a chemical mix-up at Kindercare in Woolston caused burns during a slip-and-slide activity.

Staff had mistakenly used a corrosive kitchen steriliser instead of dishwashing liquid, leading to skin irritation and light blistering among the children.

Emergency services assessed 40 people, deploying a major response that included nine ambulances and specialised support teams.

The affected children and two staff members were treated.

Kindercare has launched a full internal investigation, while WorkSafe has also begun its own inquiry into how the hazardous substance was misidentified.
