Auckland commuters returning from the holiday break faced disruptions as buses replaced trains across the rail network, which is closed for critical upgrades throughout January.

KiwiRail is upgrading over 110 sites to prepare for the City Rail Link, with express bus services operating on the Eastern, Southern, and Western lines.

Auckland Transport say the work is set to deliver faster, more reliable train services by 2026.

Most train services will resume on January 28, with full service, including electric trains from Pukekohe, back by February 3.

Increased freight truck activity in areas like Onehunga and Penrose is expected to cause delays, but Auckland Transport has implemented traffic management measures to ease congestion.
