Auckland foodbanks facing closure over funding crisis

Some of Auckland’s largest foodbanks are at risk of shutting down or significantly reducing services after the government indicated it would not provide ongoing funding next year.

Despite a one-off grant to sustain operations through 2024, organisations like Auckland City Mission are uncertain about their future.

City Missioner Helen Robinson spoke to state media of her deep concern, highlighting that without government support, food parcel distribution could drop from 50,000 to 20,000 annually, leaving many Aucklanders in desperate need. Other foodbanks, such as Buttabean Motivation and Good Works Trust have made public pleas for donations to meet surging demand, with many still struggling despite temporary financial boosts.

Foodbank leaders are calling for permanent government funding, arguing they are filling gaps in the social welfare system as referrals from state agencies rise.

Sophie Gray of Good Works Trust slammed the lack of support, noting that grants from charities are increasingly competitive and insufficient to meet the demand for food aid. Interim chief executive of Presbyterian Support Northern Pam Elgar, labelled the reliance on foodbanks as a sign of systemic failure, showing an urgent need for structural changes.

Meanwhile, Minister of Social Development Louise Upston defended the government’s shift toward funding infrastructure for food distribution rather than direct financial support for foodbanks, citing fiscal constraints. Providers warn that without sustainable funding, closures are inevitable, leaving vulnerable communities without critical assistance.

  1. Auckland foodbanks facing closure over funding crisis while the politicians in cohort with their corporate masters make sure that the internatjewal bankster cabal is paid their extortions.
New Zealand is nothing but a milk farm to them and YOU are the cattle.

  2. All the crapping on and wishful thinking on the part of the MSM, who keep saying how consistent and strong support for this current globalist government is. Most of it largely based on minuscule polls, that offer a myopic take on public sentiment.

I’m calling bull**** on that, just look at how impoverished people are becoming, even those on decent incomes and its clear that this country is in trouble and support for these creeps is tenuous, at best, as well it should be. Not that they are even remotely aware of what people think, with their snouts firmly stuck in the trough.

  3. There was no “fiscal restraint” when it comes to taking lavish overseas trips by politicians or giving the Kiev regime, tens of millions of dollars of our tax payer money……

  4. So the government’s economic master plan basically amounts to this: cut spending everywhere. If this is the case, so be it, but are they going to reduce their MP salaries and benefits too? There’s a few million to be saved right there, but i suppose a politician voting for a pay cut is like a turkey voting for Christmas

  5. Closing at Christmas and New Years…a manufactured event of depriving those in need of necessary food!
All part of the planned Holodomor via gradualism (ie gradual price increases on food, gradual reduction in food production, gradual inception of Holodomor…).
This shows the contempt that the J3wi$h-kontrolled entities and enterprises have towards those who are non-J3w$!
Next will come; de-banking, denial of health services, genocides etc. for criticising the horrific Satanic elements of Zionist J3w$!
WE MUST ALL WATCH VERY CLOSELY THE MP’s ALONG WITH WHO AND WHAT THEY SUPPORT THAT WILL BE RELATED TO THE ABOVE, AND DEMAND THAT IF THEY DO IN FACT SUPPORT THE ZIONIST CAUSE TO NOT VOTE OR SUPPORT THEM EVER AGAIN AND THEIR POLITICAL PARTIES!

  6. People that work in Op shops voluntarily will often pick out the things they like before putting the rest on the shelves and food bank workers are voluntary so there is a conclusion to be drawn there also. Just saying, but community co-ops may be more functional in some areas. Last time I went to a food bank (to drop off produce) I was sniffily told, “you have to have an appointment and a winz referral” ! It’s dog eat dog out there when growing your own is as dangerous as dumpster diving thanks to all the cat lovers and the toxoplasmosis which cats dump in the soil.
