A class action has been filed against Transpower and maintenance contractor Omexom on behalf of about 20,000 Northland businesses affected by a June 2024 power outage caused by the collapse of a pylon after contractors removed multiple securing nuts at once.
The outage cut electricity to around 180,000 people, with some major industries losing days of production and economic losses estimated between $60m and $80m. Lawyers argue the failure was “entirely avoidable” and say the $1 million resilience fund offered by the companies was insufficient.
The opt-out lawsuit, backed by litigation funder Omni Bridgeway, seeks compensation based on losses and is built largely on Transpower and Electricity Authority reports.
Transpower has been served but declined comment, while Omexom could not be reached.

It’s all good, the slippery corporate transpower CEO’s in eye-darting collusion with
the greasy rancid bad-breathed politicians in the wasp-nest will just double ya power-bills
to cover costs then jet off to the bahamas for a lovely one month
vacation over the christmas holdays as per usual.
Politicians remind me of the word c*nt
Which means “less than 30 acres”
