A house fire in Sanson has claimed the lives of four people — three of them children — prompting shock and grief in the small Manawatū community.

Emergency services were called to the State Highway 1 property on Saturday afternoon, where police initially confirmed multiple fatalities but later clarified the devastating toll.

Mayor Michael Ford told state-funded media the tragedy was heartbreaking for the tight-knit village, saying the community would rally to support those affected.

A scene guard remained in place overnight as investigators returned on Sunday to examine the cause of the blaze, which briefly forced the closure of SH1 between Phillips Street and Speedy Road.

  1. How is it that a house can burn down in broad daylight and nobody can get out? Were they all drugged, tied up or beaten to death beforehand? One of the (presumably) parents died. Where’s the other one? ****** most probably.
