Haka in public gallery forces temporary suspension of Parliament

Parliament was briefly suspended after a haka erupted in the public gallery following Te Pāti Māori MP Oriini Kaipara’s maiden speech.

The spontaneous display began after a waiata, with several attendees joining in despite Speaker Gerry Brownlee’s earlier instruction that no haka would occur.

Brownlee halted proceedings, declaring the House suspended, and later condemned the act as “contemptuous”. He announced an investigation into whether any MPs or parties had prior knowledge of the planned haka, stressing that parliamentary protocol relies on mutual agreement and adherence to procedure.

  1. Parliament has turned into a freak show
    And has lost the plot
All that is missing is a hairy lady
    Feeding time at the zoo
    A National embarrassment

    • Correct me if I’m wrong, I thought these guys are suspended without pay.

I would very much like to see the cost of the disruption to be deducted from their income. Why should the tax payer pay?

  2. Oh the victim mentality, the easy road will always overide what is really right and wrong, what you are paid or not paid to do. I beleive Te Pati represent 7% of victim NZ?? Get over it the Vikings were here first so start paying your dues.

  3. I think therapy should commence first.
Then maybe tuition in reasoning, followed by lessons in history and general humanism.
As encouragement or reward show them the thing about shoes.

  4. So.
    Disruption?
You’re willing to accept filibustering and weasel words, theft and lies, but not prepared to accept Maori tradition.
    Hypocrites.
Haka is used for a wide range of purposes, including celebrating, welcoming guests, expressing grief or protest, and performing at important ceremonies like weddings and funerals. While historically performed before battle to unite and intimidate warriors, the haka is a multifaceted expression of cultural pride, unity, strength, and deep emotion for the Māori people.

    • I thought there was something like social evolution to make reasoning and intellect the basis for dialog.
Screaming and dancing around half-naked is a bit savage.
      So are theft and lies.
      Just ask the Manurewa Marae.
On the other hand it is hillarious to see how establishmnet filibusters deal with savagery, not realizing that the whole beehive is a savage filth pit.
