Joint complaint filed to UN over impending climate change legislation

Climate change complaint

Legislation announced in May that would amend climate laws to prevent liability findings in torts (civil claims for harm or negligence), has been challenged by a joint effort with iwi and climate change activists.

Climate activist and Iwi spokesperson Mike Smith is the plaintiff in a case against Fonterra and other major greenhouse gas emitters that would be blocked by these new changes. He said the group has asked the UN to intervene on their behalf.

RCR host Jaspreet Boparai said that this coordination is emblematic of “the usual playbook: when activists can’t win the democratic argument at home, they run to unelected UN bureaucrats overseas for muscle”. Read more at RNZ, NZ Herald and Mike Smith’s commentary on E-Tangata.
