Former U.S. President Barack Obama could now be compelled to testify before a grand jury regarding his involvement in the FBI’s handling of former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, according to a viral claim by journalist John Solomon circulating on social media.
Solomon asserts that while Obama enjoys immunity from prosecution for actions taken during his presidency, he would be legally required to testify truthfully as a private citizen—and could lose that immunity if he lies under oath.
The scenario, described by some commentators as a “legal trap,” stems from a January 5, 2017, Oval Office meeting—attended by Obama, then-Vice President Joe Biden, FBI Director James Comey, and others—during which the FBI had reportedly just cleared Flynn of wrongdoing.
