The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed there is no tsunami threat following a 6.8 magnitude earthquake off the lower South Island, initially recorded as a 7.0.
While there is no need for evacuation, NEMA advises the public to avoid beaches and marine areas at the bottom of the South Island due to the risk of strong currents and surges, which could pose a danger to swimmers, surfers, and those fishing or near the shore.
