A Marlborough man has been jailed after a furious outburst ended with a vineyard cottage burned to the ground, leaving its owners devastated and hundreds of thousands of dollars out of pocket.

39-year-old Jack Norris had been living in the Fairhall property while on electronic bail after his girlfriend arranged temporary accommodation for him as he waited for a space in an addiction rehab facility.

Unbeknown to the vineyard owner and her son, Norris had a criminal history, including a prior arson conviction, and had never been granted permission to stay beyond occasional visits.

Tensions escalated over several weeks, and by July 2023 Norris had been told to leave because of increasingly erratic behaviour.

On his birthday, and alone in the cottage, he breached bail by drinking heavily before smashing belongings, throwing furnishings outside, and ultimately setting multiple fires inside the home.

By the time Fire and Emergency crews arrived, the blaze had taken hold, destroying the cottage and everything inside it. The loss totalled nearly $739,000, leaving the owner more than $114,000 out of pocket even after insurance.

In the Blenheim District Court, the owner described the ordeal as traumatic and deeply violating, telling Norris he had “completely destroyed” her family’s sense of safety. Despite continuing to deny deliberate arson, Norris apologised in court, at one point interrupting proceedings to claim the fire was unintentional.

Judge Jo Rielly rejected that claim, finding his actions deliberate, vengeful, and “bizarrely criminal”. She sentenced him to five and a half years in prison, including six months for spitting at a police officer during his arrest, and ordered him to pay $11,427 in reparation.

    Reparations?
    What a joke

  2. Under the Trespass Act 1980
An individual cannot be trespassed from any individual town city or area
This is a serious deficiency gap and oversight in the Law
This needs to be rectified immediately to give this botch up teeth and not having to resort to performing mere lip service and dishing out hollow sentences
Something needs to be done and current legislation is clearly seen as inadequate and not working
Or are we going to continue handing out wet bus tickets – out of touch – inconsistent not reflecting in severity with the crime committed?
And carry on to keep kicking this can down the road forever
I would suggest this would be a good place to start
