The incident occurred after Busby invited the girl to his home in Stratford, Taranaki, on January 11, 2025, where they engaged in sexual activity despite her disclosing her age.
The now 13-year-old girl, visibly pregnant in court, faced significant life changes, including changing schools, moving in with relatives, and enduring community stigma and family strain. She expressed a desire to parent her child, supported by family members and a social worker.
Judge Tony Greig highlighted the intergenerational harm caused by Busby, who has a criminal history and other children, noting that his actions drastically altered the girl’s life and future. Busby’s claims of being unaware of her age and feeling “set up” were dismissed, as they contradicted the agreed facts, and he was placed on the Sex Offender Register.
