A Hamilton woman has been jailed for her role in a violent aggravated robbery just days after giving birth.
Brooke Knight left hospital while her newborn remained in the neonatal unit. She joined her partner, Lance Gray, who was pursuing an alleged drug debt.
The pair forced their way into a home and confronted the occupants. Gray armed himself with a hammer. Knight demanded money. She then elbowed a wheelchair-bound woman in the face and stole cash and cigarettes.
According to a report in legacy media, the court heard Knight was still recovering from childbirth complications and had another sick child in hospital.
Her lawyer said she had not planned the offending and was drawn into it. Prosecutors said both offenders tried to shift blame. Judge Tini Clark said it was difficult to assess her responsibility. Knight was sentenced to 22 months in prison and granted leave to apply for home detention.
