New Zealand Police have apologised to the family of convicted murderer Ross Appelgren after admitting they lost the original 1985 homicide investigation file.

The blunder has been described by investigator Tim McKinnel as “extraordinary” and unprecedented.

The file—comprising boxes of critical case documents—was last accessed by detectives in 2021 for an unrelated case and has not been seen since.

Appelgren was convicted in 1985 of murdering Darcy Te Hira. The killing was linked to an alleged contract hit, though Appelgren maintained his innocence throughout two trials and decades of appeals.

Appelgren’s widow, Julie, who is seeking to overturn her late husband’s conviction, lodged a complaint with the Independent Police Conduct Authority, but no independent probe was conducted.

The loss further complicates her legal team’s long-running efforts to appeal a case already marred by withheld evidence, retrials, and decades of delay, with a new hearing expected next year.
