Police have recovered stolen laptops and caught one alleged offender after a late-night break-in at Blockhouse Bay Intermediate School.
Around 10pm on Sunday, alarms were triggered at the Bolton Road school, prompting a swift response from officers. When police arrived, they confirmed classrooms had been broken into and items were missing.
The police Eagle helicopter quickly located two males jumping fences nearby in an apparent attempt to escape. With Eagle tracking overhead, a police dog team picked up a scent trail that led officers directly to the suspects.
One alleged offender was found carrying a bag containing three laptops, which were recovered and returned to the school. A 17-year-old male has since been referred to Youth Aid.
Auckland City West Area Response Manager Senior Sergeant Guy Baldwin said the incident highlights the seriousness of targeting schools.
“This is not acceptable, especially when offending targets important places like our schools,” he said.
Enquiries are continuing to identify the second offender. Police are appealing for information from the public, which can be provided online using the reference number 250922/5751 or anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
