New Zealanders concerned about genetically engineered food and the controversial Gene Technology Bill will gather for peaceful supermarket vigils, beginning this Saturday, 17 May.
The campaign promoted by GE Honesty calls for action to “Label GE Food” and “Stop the Gene Technology Bill”, and will spotlight proposed changes to genetic modification laws.
The first vigil will take place outside Woolworths at 4 Williamson Avenue, Grey Lynn, from 11:00 to 11:40 a.m., followed by a second gathering at New World, 2 College Hill, Victoria Park in Auckland, from 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
GE Honesty says the events are intended to encourage clearer labelling of genetically engineered products and to challenge the bill’s potential impact on food sovereignty and environmental and health safety.

A vigil is also planned in Orewa on 24 May, with full details expected to be announced soon.
Similar events are being prepared to take place outside MPs’ electorate offices.
